Wear-and-tear and articular cartilage degradation that develops over time are frequently the causes of knee osteoarthritis (OA), also known as degenerative joint disease. It arises in two types, main and secondary, and most frequently affects elderly people: Articular degeneration caused by primary osteoarthritis has no discernible underlying aetiology. Secondary osteoarthritis results from either defective articular cartilage or an aberrant concentration of force across the joint, as with post-traumatic causes. Osteoarthritis is a debilitating, long-term joint condition that typically impacts the knees, hands, hips, and spine. Each person's symptom intensity varies, and they typically worsen gradually. When non-surgical therapy alternatives are ineffective, knee osteoarthritis is treated with conservative measures first. While medications can help slow the progression of RA and other inflammatory conditions, there are currently no proven disease-modifying agents for the treatment of knee OA.
